Most PMs don’t see it yet. Most boards don’t see it either.
I went through live job postings at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. What I found isn’t a slightly more technical version of yesterday’s PM role. It’s a fundamentally different profile — and the gap between those who adapt and those who don’t is widening fast.
A few things that stood out:
QA is now eval design
Wireframes are now working prototypes, built with code
Success metrics now include model quality scores and eval pass rates
The PMs making this shift are looking at 2x to 3x jumps in what they earn and the roles they can own
But the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: this isn’t just a career story. It’s a leadership gap story.
Boards are asking “do we have an AI strategy?”
The real question is: “do we have the product leadership to execute one?”
Those are very different questions.
I wrote the full breakdown — what the job postings actually say, what it means if you’re early in your career, what it means if you’re a seasoned PM, a before/after workflow showing the same feature built in 14 weeks vs 2 weeks, and 6 questions every board should be asking their CPO right now.
